WJE Project Receives 2019 Preservation and Design Award
Northwestern University’s 2135 Orrington property recently received the Evanston Preservation Commission’s 2019 Preservation and Design Award in the Sensitive Addition/Alteration and Proper Rehabilitation/Restoration categories. WJE served as structural engineer for the project. Built over a century ago, the historic home had fallen into disrepair and suffered from significant waterproofing and structural problems. Apart from the shell and staircase, the property needed to be completely gutted. A new floor plan was developed that included more open rooms, additional storage space, and larger bathrooms. In addition, the basement was dug out to create higher ceilings. On the exterior, the front porch was also disassembled and recreated to correct the structural settling.
