Instantly recognizable in countless photographs of the downtown Minneapolis skyline, the 3rd Avenue Bridge over the Mississippi River is an iconic historic concrete arch bridge that recently celebrated its 100th birthday. The bridge, opened on Flag Day in 1918, is one of twenty-four bridges of prominent historic significance that the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) has selected for long-term preservation.
In this article, structural engineers Arne Johnson and Tanner Swenson summarize the investigation and rehabilitation design to address advanced concrete deterioration of the bridge’s historic concrete elements.
