Hartford Times Building Receives Multiple Awards
The Hartford Times Building has received a Charter Award in the Block, Street, and Building category from the Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU). The Hartford Times Building is a historic Beaux-Arts building in central Hartford that was restored to provide a new home for a downtown campus for the University of Connecticut (UConn). Robert A.M. Stern Architects (RAMSA), the architect of record for the rehabilitation project, originally retained WJE to complete the restoration of the retained west facade of the building. When UConn elected to retain additional portions of the structure, WJE was additionally engaged to develop a demolition approach, design a retention scheme, complete a lateral analysis, and perform monitoring during construction. The CNU Charter Awards have been given annually since 2001 and are the world’s preeminent awards for urban design, placemaking, and community building.
The Hartford Times Building also received a 2018 Connecticut Preservation Award of Merit from the Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation (CT Trust). The CT Trust's merit awards honor the grit, investment, and imagination of the people who rescue or repurpose historic places crucial to Connecticut's identity.
