Methods to protect museum collections from vibrations caused by large construction projects, usually outside or at the perimeter of a museum, have been reported elsewhere (see Johnson et al., “Vibration Control During Museum Construction Projects,” Journal of the American Institute for Conservation, 2013). For smaller-scale construction works internal to a museum, more targeted and limited vibration control programs may be possible. This article illustrates such a targeted approach using the case study of a chiller replacement project at the Neue Galerie New York. The article is coauthored with Mark DeMairo, associate director for the museum.
This article was originally published in the Summer-Fall 2017 issue of Papyrus, a magazine published by the International Association of Museum Facility Administrators.
