Jeffrey S. Levine

Experience

Jeffrey Levine is a nationally recognized expert in the field of slate roofing with thirty-five years of experience in building materials conservation, much of which has focused on steep-slope and low-slope roof systems. 

Mr. Levine has been a project manager for more than four hundred envelope restoration and rehabilitation projects, preservation plans, and maintenance programs for academic, commercial, residential, and ecclesiastical buildings, museums, industrial structures, and ruins. This project diversity has provided Mr. Levine with technical experience in the full range of historic and modern roofing and building materials, as well as their related construction systems.

Mr. Levine is the recipient of many project and publication awards and has authored numerous technical articles on roofing. Prior to joining WJE in 2018, he was the founding principal of Levine & Company, a roof and building envelope consulting firm specializing in the conservation of historic building materials and systems.

Roofing and Waterproofing

  • University of Pennsylvania, Module VII Chiller Plant - Philadelphia: Replacement and upgrade of 35,000-square-foot modified bitumen roof system
  • Pier 3 Condominium - Philadelphia, PA: Replacement of plaza waterproofing above parking garage, including a new sloped parge for enhanced drainage and reinforced concrete e topping slab
  • Amherst Mews HOA - Basking Ridge, NJ: Replacement of dimensional asphalt shingle roofing and associated flashing repair and roof deck replacement for forty-unit building luxury townhome development
  • Philadelphia Contributionship - PA: Roof replacement, including new slate and standing seam copper roofing, copper and liquid-applied membrane built-in gutters; associated carpentry and masonryrestoration work
  • Academy of Music - Philadelphia, PA: Design development documents for replacing National Historic Landmark’s lead-coated copper standing seam roof system and associated built-in gutter liners

 

Roof Assessment and Design

  • Swarthmore College, Bond Hall, Lodges Hall, and Worth Hall - Swarthmore, PA: Feasibility study and condition assessment of slate roofs, flat seam copper roofs, and steel casement windows, including expected remaining service lives and the merits of repair versus replacement
  • Sheraton University City - Philadelphia, PA: Roofing condition assessment and infrared survey to determine feasibility of roof re-cover instead of roof replacement
  • University of Pennsylvania, Fisher Fine Arts Library - Philadelphia: Feasibility study for repair/rehabilitation of National Historic Landmark structure, including tile, batten seam lead-coated copper, and low-slope EPDM membrane roofs and associated flashings and rainwater conduction systems
  • Delaware County Courthouse - Media, PA: Condition assessment and feasibility study for existing batten seam copper, built-up, EPDM, and asphalt shingle roofs at the c.1850 courthouse (with later additions)

  • Bryn Athyn Cathedral and St. Mark’s Church -  Philadelphia, PA: Annual/biannual roof maintenance assessment and repair documentation
  • Haverford College - Haverford, PA; Annual/biannual roof maintenance assessment and repair documentation
  • Merck - Rahway, NJ: Roof replacement at historic Building 50, including slate roofing and cladding, new copper box gutters, flat seam copper gussets, liquid-applied membrane roofing, and associated flashings
  • Haverford College, Whitehead Campus Center - Haverford, PA: Slate roof rehabilitation, including slate repair and upgrade of snow retention, lightning protection, and skylight systems

  • Private Residence - Gladwyne, PA: Review of documentation, field survey, diagnostic water infiltration testing, analysis, and repair recommendations for roof and chimney leaks
  • Ardmore Presbyterian Church - Ardmore, PA: Slate roof condition assessment and investigation of eighteen roof leaks; multiphase roof repair program
