Investigation of Storm Damage Claims
Storm Sandy passed through the New Jersey coast on October 29, 2012, resulting in extensive damage to beach front property. Surfside Estates was exposed to wind gusts estimated at up to 90 miles per hour. Claims of wind damages included structural, roofing, siding, windows, doors, and interior finishes.
BACKGROUND
The twenty-six-condominium units are located in seven adjacent wood-framed, three-story structures constructed on the ocean front beach in 2001. The building envelope was constructed with vinyl siding, vinyl-clad windows and doors, and asphalt shingles.
SOLUTION
WJE engineers, architects and roof consultants investigated the structure, roofing, siding, doors, windows, and interior finishes of each unit to verify the extent of wind-related damages attributed to the storm. The investigation determined that the extent of damages to the buildings related to wind forces and wind-borne debris was generally limited to minor localized loss of shingles, siding, and soffit panels as well as minor interior water damage below missing shingles.
