Peer Review and Condition Observations
During the design of this thirteen-story apartment building, the general contractor became concerned that the use of several different cladding materials—and the associated complex integration and interface requirements—might cause water leakage problems in the building envelope.
BACKGROUND
The building's exterior walls include a reinforced concrete frame with brick masonry veneer, aluminum storefront windows, precast concrete panels, and reinforced concrete masonry unit (CMU) infill.
SOLUTION
WJE engineers reviewed the building envelope design to identify and help resolve potential water leakage problems and cladding integration issues during construction. The engineers also provided construction period services, including review of cladding shop drawings and periodic observations of the building envelope work, to provide a measure of confidence that the as-built construction properly reflected WJE's general recommendations.
