Salk Institute Awarded Twice by California Preservation Foundation
WJE’s work on the Salk Institute for Biological Studies received two awards from the California Preservation Foundation. In addition to obtaining the President’s Award, the teak wood window conservation project was awarded the Preservation Design Award in the Craftsmanship/Preservation Technology category.
The Salk Institute for Biological Studies was founded by Jonas Salk, the developer of the polio vaccine. After fifty years in an exposed marine environment, the Salk Institute for Biological Studies decided to embark upon a conservation-based approach to address the teak window assemblies that had weathered and deteriorated significantly. WJE was retained to develop a window inventory, repairs, and construction documents for the long-term care of the teak wood windows.
