Mount Moriah Cemetery Gatehouse Receives Award

The Mount Moriah Cemetery Gatehouse project was selected to receive a 2018 Preservation Achievement Grand Jury Award from the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia. The ornate sandstone-clad gatehouse was designed by architect Stephen Decatur Button and constructed in 1855 for Mount Moriah Cemetery, a historic Philadelphia burial ground based on the “rural ideal” movement. Deteriorated by weather exposure and damaged by vandals, it was at risk of collapsing before it could be restored by the Mount Moriah Cemetery Preservation Corporation. WJE provided pro bono structural engineering services to design temporary stabilization measures, limiting further loss of historic fabric until funds could be raised for a more extensive restoration. The Preservation Achievement Awards presentation and reception will take place on June 6.
