Design Like a Girl

WJE Washington, D.C. staff recently completed the inaugural year of the Design Like a Girl Mentor Program organized through AIA|DC and the Washington Architecture Foundation. The program pairs middle school girls, ages 11–14 years old, with mentors from the architecture, construction, and engineering fields so that girls can learn about these careers first-hand from professional women.

Over the course of the school year, four Friday mentor workshops were organized pertaining to the subjects of architecture, sustainability, structural engineering, and design. During these mentor days, the girls took part in mini-presentations by the mentors in their practice areas; hands-on learning activities, including sketching and model making; and field trips. And, at the end of each day, the girls presented their work from the day to enhance their presentation skills.
