Crosstown Concourse Receives CNU Award
Crosstown Concourse recently received the Grand Prize for the toughest transformation from the Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU). Located at the 1.5-million-square-foot former home of the Sears distribution center in Memphis, Tennessee, Crosstown Concourse was the center of a large-scale, mixed-use redevelopment project, including restaurants and retail, a small grocery, a fitness center, health clinics, a charter high school, a contemporary art center, commercial offices, and 265 loft-style apartments. WJE was engaged by Looney Ricks Kiss, the architect of record for the overall project, to complete a condition survey of the building enclosure and adjacent parking structure; design repairs for the exterior stone and brick masonry and exposed concrete elements on the building facade; design repairs for the parking structure; design steel repairs for the existing loading dock canopy; design new roofing and windows for the building; and provide construction period services. On the whole, WJE served as the engineer of record for the parking garage and facade rehabilitation and the architect of record for the roofing.
The CNU Charter Awards were issued at the 26th CNU Conference in Savannah, Georgia, on May 18. These awards have been given annually since 2001 and are the world’s preeminent awards for urban design, placemaking, and community building.
