All Saints Episcopal Church Receives Award

The All Saints Episcopal Church—one of the oldest wood-framed shingle-style buildings in Chicago, Illinois—recently received a 2018 Faith & Form/Interfaith Design Religious Art & Architecture Award in the category of Religious Architecture: Restoration. The ambitious restoration of this architectural landmark faced many challenges, including a deteriorated original wood posts foundation, a non-original vestibule that was settling and pulling the east wall of the sanctuary out of plumb, a historic bell tower that lacked lateral stability, and failing stained-glass windows that were missing glazing and structurally compromised. Painstaking removal of the stucco resulted in 90 percent of the original wood siding being restored. WJE was the structural engineer for this restoration project.
