The use of advanced NDE techniques and material sampling can provide more detailed and accurate information to assess the condition of bridge decks. Service life modeling further provides insight into the future performance of a given bridge deck, and these methods can then be used to provide structure-specific data-driven comparisons between different preservation and maintenance strategies allowing bridge owners to make better informed decisions.
In this article, engineers Marwa Abdelrahman, Mohamed ElBatanouny, and Stephen Garrett discuss the current state of practice for required bridge deck inspections; advanced nondestructive evaluation and material testing; service life modeling and life-cycle cost; and approaches for bridge deck preservation, maintenance, and rehabilitation.
