In the context of historic preservation, the use of coatings presents unique and interesting challenges. For example, existing coatings on historic structures may be inherently significant—e.g., murals, stencils, historic color schemes—or nonoriginal and not appropriate to the historic character of the structure. They may be remarkably intact, or they may be deteriorated and fragile.
